At this stage, rankings become less relevant, because your institution is now fixed. However, you should still check the latest data on your course and university, because rankings and official data can update between the time you applied and the time you start. If a university's ranking has dropped significantly, do not panic; read the methodology to understand why. A change in how a metric is calculated can move universities up or down without any change in their actual quality. If the drop is driven by a real decline in performance, such as a sharp fall in student satisfaction, that is worth noting, but it may still not be decisive if your course and personal needs are well-aligned.

An important consideration for international students is whether the university is on the UKVI's list of licensed sponsors with a track record of compliance. This information is not reflected in rankings, but it is essential. A university that has had its sponsor licence suspended or revoked would be unable to sponsor your Student visa, regardless of its ranking. Always check the UKVI register of licensed sponsors before finalising your choice. Rankings are a helpful compass for navigating the hundreds of UK universities, but the map of practical requirements includes features that no ranking can show. Your application timeline should make space for both types of research, with rankings early and practical checks as you narrow your options.
